A good patio starts below the slabs.

The slabs are what you see, but it's the groundwork underneath that decides whether a patio stays flat and dry for years or starts to rock, sink and hold puddles. Every patio we lay starts with the digging out, a properly compacted sub-base and the right fall, so rainwater runs away from the house rather than towards it.

We've been laying patios across East Dorset since 2009 — from a seating area outside a new garden room to a 100 sqm porcelain terrace wrapping around a house and conservatory. We'll help you choose the layout, slab size and finish, then give you a fixed written price before anything starts.

Porcelain or natural stone?

Porcelain is dense, hard-wearing and easy to keep clean. It shrugs off stains and moss better than most natural stone, and the colour stays consistent from slab to slab. Indian sandstone gives you natural variation and texture, and suits more traditional gardens. We've laid both, from dark grey and mottled grey porcelain to Carbon Indian Sandstone.

The finishing touches

Edging and pointing make a big difference to how a patio looks. We frame patios with charcoal edging stones or kerb-stone borders against the lawn, choose a grout finish to suit the slab, and can tie a new patio in with paths, sleeper borders and fresh turf so the whole garden feels finished.

Garden room patio, path & lawn

Dorset

Bare, churned-up ground around a brand-new garden room, turned into a finished garden. We laid mottled grey porcelain with aged slabs, framed it with rustic charcoal edging stones and graffito grouting, ran a porcelain path down the side of the garden room, built a raised sleeper border painted in Cuprinol Shades anthracite and planted with Griselinia hedging, then laid a new lawn.

FAQ

Patio questions, answered.

Can't see your question? Call us on 07515 341284 — happy to help, no hard sell.

Every garden is different, so we price each job properly rather than quoting a rate per square metre. What moves the price is access to the garden, the materials you choose, how much preparation the area needs, the location, and whether any plant or equipment has to be hired in. We visit, measure up and give you a fixed written quote — free, with no obligation.

Neither is better for every garden. Porcelain is very low-maintenance, consistent in colour and resists staining and moss. Indian sandstone has more natural character and variation, and usually needs a little more cleaning to keep it looking its best. We'll talk you through both at your free site visit.

Most patios in back gardens don't need planning permission, as long as they're at ground level. It can be different if the patio is raised, if your home is listed or in a conservation area, or if you're paving a front garden with a hard surface that drains onto the road — see our driveways page for that one. If in doubt, check with your council before work starts.

It depends on the size of the patio, how much digging out is needed, the ground conditions and access to your garden. We set out a realistic timeline in your written quote before anything starts, so you know where you stand.
