Fencing & gates

A fence is only as strong as its posts.

Most fences that fail don't fail at the panels — they fail at the posts. Posts need to be set deep and firm enough to take the load when the wind catches a run of fencing, and that matters even more in exposed gardens near the coast.

We'll talk you through the options for your boundary — timber or concrete posts, gravel boards, standard panels, close-board or decorative screening — and recommend what suits your garden, your budget and how long you want it to last.

Gates

From a wide five-bar timber gate across a driveway to a side gate by the house, we hang gates to swing and close properly, and make sure the posts either side are up to the job.

Fencing often goes hand in hand with other work, so if you're also planning a patio, driveway or new lawn, we can price it all together.

FAQ

Fencing questions, answered.

Can't see your question? Call us on 07515 341284 — happy to help, no hard sell.

Usually not. In England you can normally put up a fence or gate up to 2 metres high without planning permission, or up to 1 metre where it's next to a road used by vehicles (or the footpath beside it). Listed buildings, conservation areas and some newer estates can have extra restrictions, so check if that applies to you.

By convention the 'good side' faces outwards, towards your neighbour, with the posts and rails on your side — although no law says it must. Who owns a boundary is shown in your property deeds, so it's worth checking those and having a word with your neighbour before work starts.

Yes. We're a registered waste carrier, so we can remove and dispose of old panels, posts and concrete legally as part of the job.

It depends on the length of the run, the height, the type of fence and posts, any gates, and how easy the old fence is to remove. We visit, measure up and give you a fixed written quote — free, with no obligation.
